On the weekend of 10 and 11 September, FHU in collaboration with the PAV, meet the local communities for a series of visits, conversations, workshops and assemblies, opening a process of common creation and testimonies of requests and desires.

Free Home University Collective is a collective at the crossroads between participatory art, social research, experimental pedagogy and political commitment. They have been carrying out artistic investigations and convivial research processes since 2014, with interventions in marginal territories together with communities of struggle and practice, in particular around issues social and ecological justice, through artistic perspectives, transversal learning methods, the horizontal sharing of knowledge. An intensely collective experience, in which living together and co-creating a shared space-time are the main pedagogical tools, has led to the creation of a porous community of artists, scholars, farmers, activists, thinkers, change makers, migrants who participate to moments of study, life, work, creation, producing change.

The installation within the exhibition path in the PAV spaces includes the projection of the learning film Gente di Farina, Acqua e Sale created by the Russian collective Chto Delat in 2019, some banners and flags made by the artists Babi Badalov, Nikolay Oleynikov, Luigi Coppola and Isabella Faggiano, together with other participants in the sessions led by them, and traces of some pedagogical paths, collaborations with the realities of the territory and support campaigns collected in the bulletin board present in the exhibition.

  Presentation of the film Against the tide by Riccardo Grando and Giacomo Graziano (winners of the Sustainable Views call – points of view differentiated). The film recounts the commitment of the Environmental Foundation for Africa, an organisation born in Sierra Leone in response to the dramatic social events and the country’s climate emergency, supporting the community with environmentally sustainable programs. Through the words of the founder Tommy Garnett, the documentary tells the challenges and events from 1992 to the present day, against the backdrop of an almost ten-year civil war and the recent Ebola epidemic that has affected thousands of people.

  Commented viewing of the learning film, Gente di Farina, Acqua e Sale, exercises starting from some chapters and creations in salt paste, led by Alessandra Pomarico. The film – featured in the Sustaining Assembly exhibition – created by the Chto Delat collective portrays a session of Free Home University in Castiglione d’Otranto, a small village in the extreme south-east of Puglia where FHU has been collaborating with Casa delle Agriculture activists since 2014. A group of young asylum seekers, artists, activists and “change cultivators” become co-authors and protagonists of the story that develops on the double level of the autobiographical story and of the narrative and artistic prefiguration. Chto Delat, revisiting the Brechtian didactic tradition of learning plays, and guiding the process through somatic exercises, story telling, story-placing and life in common, creates a work in which the film in its making is both a learning process and a device of plural knowledge.

  Presentation of the book edited by Alessandra Pomarico and Nikolay Oleynikov (FHU), with the publisher Chiara Figone (Archive Books, Berlin). When the roots start moving. To navigate backward / Resonating with Zapatismo, Chto Delat and Free Home University- Mouvement One, Archive Books, 2021. The book, the first of three movements, collects contributions by various authors who respond to the urges of the Zapatistas, indigenous Campesini of Chiapas (visiting Europe for the first time in the summer of 2021), who since 1994 have supported their own anti-capitalist revolution and autonomy, building its own governmental and political infrastructure independently of the central state. In the book, essays on Zapatista poetics and politics and their civic pedagogy alternate with works by Russian artists and activists of the Chto Delat collective, which since 2015 has led a slow orientation in Zapatism, that is an artistic, political and pedagogical research that includes a trilogy of films, installations, visual works and horizontal learning processes in collaboration with various communities in Russia, Italy, Greece and Mexico.
